Lushan Botanical Garden (LSBG), Jiangxi Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in 1934 by Hu Hsen Hsu (a renowned botanist and the founder of recent botany in China), ChingRen Chang (the founder of Pteridology in China) and Chen FengHwai (‘father of botanical garden’ in China). It is the first subtropical mountainous botanical garden of China occupying an area of over 333 ha.Seventeen living collections including Pinaceaegarden, Rhododendron garden, fern garden, greenhouse and kiwi gardenhave been built through continuous work by scientists and technological workers of generations.  More than 5500 species are ex-situconserved, of which 157 species belong to the rare and endangered plants. LSBG is one of the most important bases of biodiversity conservation in China, especially well-known forPinaceae conservation, Rhododendron conservation and Pteridophyta conservation. These achievements push LSBG up as an extraordinary and irreplaceable botanical garden in China.

LSBG adheres to the developmental concept of science connotation, beautiful scenery and cultural details. Ithas established friendly collaboration with 271 international organizations and botanical institutes from 69 countries/regions, such as the United States, Belgium and Russian. It is also a member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). LSBG has plannedto build Poyang Lake Botanical Garden (subdivision of LSBG) with the approvals of Jiangxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Jiangxi Development and Reform Commission and Jiujiang Government to speed up the building of National Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone and the development of ecological civilization. This project has been started in June 2011. Both gardens engage in species preservation, scientific research, public education and society service. Relying on famous mountain and lake, LSBG and its branch set the primary goals as effective conservation and utilization of aquatic plants and ecosystem research of Poyang Lake, for the purpose of becoming a world-leading botanical garden and serving the national ecological security and local economic construction.

As a famous tourist attraction in China, LSBG receives about 800 thousand visitors per year from both nation-wide and abroad.Due to its great contribution to science education to the public, LSBG becomes numerous education bases including National Popular Science Education Base, National Adolescents S&T Education Base, National Wild Plants Education Base, the Base for Popular Science in Jiangxi Province, Advanced Group of National Popular Science Education etc.
